Bitwardon is a popular open source password management solution that we have mentioned many times in the past. This is one of our recommended password managers.
Bitwardon announced Recently it has been changing how users sign in their vaults. By now, users can be divided into two groups: they only sign up with user names and passwords, and which use two-step authentication or other additional security stages.
Since February 2025, all users would have automatically enabled two-phase logins under certain circumstances.
What is changing here:
- Users who sign in with their user names and passwords are affected.
- An email with a code is sent to their linked address.
- To complete the certification, this code needs to be recorded on the sign in page.
- This only affects new devices (including old equipment, if cookies are removed or apps are uninstall)
Bitwardon says this is done to improve the safety of users who have not enabled two steps login. This does not apply to self-hosted solutions, SSO, Pasaki, or log I of API.
What does it mean for affected bitwardon users
If you only sign in in bitwardon with user names and passwords, you are impressed.
- Make sure you have an email address related to the account.
- Or, enable using a two-step login or passki before February.

How the new process works for affected users

- The first stages of the symbol in the process remain unchanged. Users are asked to enter their user name and password.
- One of the following landscapes are next:
- If the device knows, they are signed in.
- If the device is not known, the linked email address is displayed.
A code is sent to the email and the user needs to enter the code on the sign in the page to complete the authentication.
Note that this is necessary that an email address is connected to the account. Bitwardon recommends this, but knows that some users may like otherwise. Then either two phases can enable login, use an email nickname forwarding service, or self-gathering bitter.
Change is problematic in the following scenarios:
- When users have not added an email address to their bitterdon account.
- When the email account password is specially stored in Bitterdons.
Under some circumstances, users can lock themselves from their Bittledon account in another scenario. Bitwordon recommends that users secure access to the email account linked through other means (not especially in Bitterdan Vault), or instead enable two phases of login protection, as it is related to the problem.
