The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a nationwide warning about an increase in “smooching” attacks by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). These scams are designed to cheat recipients in dividing personal and financial information by implementing valid organizations.
In these smoking campaigns, unwanted text messages are received, claiming to give money to the victims for unpaid road toll. Messages often include a link to a fraudulent website that mimics official toll service sites, motivates users to enter or pay sensitive information.
From the beginning of March 2024, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received more than 2,000 complaints related to these fraudulent toll payments. The scam has influenced individuals in various states, with cyber criminals recorded over 10,000 domains to facilitate these attacks.
The FBI advised the following precautions to protect against the attacks:
- Do not click on the link: Avoid clicking on any link in unwanted text messages, especially those who request payment or personal information.
- Verify authenticity: If you receive payment requests, contact the organization directly using official contact information to verify its validity.
- Report suspicious messages: Use the “Report Junk” feature of your phone or forward the message at 7726 (spam) to report it.
- Remove the message: After reporting, remove the suspected text to prevent contingency interaction.
As the attacks become more sophisticated, it is important for alert and doubt of unwanted messages. After following recommended precautions and informing about the general scam strategy, individuals can avoid themselves from falling prey to these fraud schemes.
