How to restore access to classic Notepad on Windows 11 | Free Download

Microsoft replaced the Classic Notepad Text Editor on Windows 11 with an advanced version, including new features such as tabs and AI Integration. Not every Windows user likes changes. Some prefer the old -fasting version of the notepad instead.

Problem: When you launch a notepad on Windows 11, for example from the Start menu or runbox, a new notepad application is launched.

Microsoft does not tell you that the Classic Notepad application is still on the ship. You can only restore it with a few basic steps, which I will outline below.

How to restore classic notepad on Windows 11

Classic Windows 11 Notepad App

Comment: These methods work on all recent versions of Windows 11, including Windows 11, version 24h2.

Here are steps:

  1. Open the start menu.
  2. Select Settings to launch the Settings application.
  3. Apps> Advanced App Settings> Navigate on the app execution surnames.
  4. Scroll down the list until you find notepad.
  5. Togle the surname to close with one click.

All this is necessary. Now you can launch a classic notepad again on the system. Try it by launching the runbox with a shortcut Windows-R, typing the notepad.x, and pressing it on the keyboard.

Disable new notepad

You should note that the Classic Notepad application has been launched. A major indicator is that you get a notification “a new version of the notepad available on top of the interface”. Removes a click notification on the close icon.

tip: Right-click the notepad icon on the Windows taskbar and select the “Pin to Taskbar” option to quickly access with a click on the permanent icon on the taskbar.

Comment: You can still launch a new notepad application. Just open the start menu, type the notepad and press the enter. This new application should be launched. You can use programs like O & O Appbuster to remove it, if you do not need it.

Do you know: You can also restore WordPad on Windows 11. The rich text editor was recently removed by Microsoft.

Closing word

There is a good chance that Microsoft is removing the option in future versions of the Windows operating system. Till then at least, you can continue the classic version of the notepad on your Windows PC.
