Microsoft is searching for new ways to promote its AI assistant, Copilot. A new update for the Copilot app for Windows added a shortcut to the right-click reference menu.
Users will now get an option with ‘Ask Copillot’ label when they right-click on a file, which is designed to make AI’s characteristics easier to access.
However, the integration of this new feature has promoted a backlash from several Windows 11 users. The reference menu, once a streamlined hub of shortcuts for regular tasks, becomes disorganized with progressive entries that find something unnecessary. Even more disappointingly, this “copylot” is not a direct way to disable the shortcut, but there are a pair of workarounds. Users who do not want to use Copilot can simply uninstall the app. Users who want to use Copilot, but do not require shortcuts, will need to edit an entry in the Windows Registry to remove it from the file explorer.

2. Change the extension of the file from .txt to .Reg. For example, if you have named it copilot.txt, change it to copilot.reg.
3. Then, double-click on the Reg file, and confirm the action. This reference will remove the Ask Copilot shortcut from the menu, but you have to restart the computer to apply changes.
