Windows 11 includes a weak backup tool that uses Onedrive to backup certain files and preferences. When you set a new PC, you can restore these back up files and settings.
This feature is away from a true backup tool, give a migration tool alone. It does not backup the installed software and contains only specific folders in relation to files.
Microsoft is working on a new migration app to help users transfer files and data from one windows PC to another. Earth’s phantom discovered and brought to life X-User DongleThe main purpose of the app is to transfer files from one windows PC to another. This feature has been found in Windows 11 Build 22635.4945, but it is not yet functional.
When you run the app, you get two options:
- Back up of this PC.
- Transfer files to a new PC.
The first option supports “all your files” on Microsoft’s Cloud Storage Service Onedrive. It is not clear whether Microsoft actually means all files, or, which is more likely, by the user or by Microsoft.
The second option moves files from one PC to another. It only works when both PC systems are connected to the wireless network or by physical proximity to each other. The process involves adding two PCs and then transferring files locally.
Functionality appears limited
The functionality of the Microsoft’s migration app appears limited at this level in the minimum growth. For one, it is possible to backup files on the ondrive already. The new feature can improve the workflow, but it does not add any new feature to it.
It is okay to move files between two Windows PCs, but it has become possible for a long time using a third-party tool.
The elephant in the room is that it seems limited to transfer of software files. Meaning, no software, no settings are transferred.
Heck, even ancient Windows Easy Transfer Tool allowed users to move user accounts, emails and other materials, which do not support the new tool of Microsoft.
Therefore, it seems as if it can become another app which is quite limited and thus not highly useful.
What can you use instead
If you only need to move files, you can use external storage devices for it. You can also use network shares or other means to move files from one PC to another. It depends on whether two PCs can be online at the same time.
Commercial programs such as PC Mover, Zinstal Or All pctrans (Free version is limited), can move other data, including installed apps and games, settings and other data.
Another option may be to clone the hard drive of the old PC. Many equipment supports it. When you can participate in problems if the new PC hardware is quite different from the old, you can try it, if you have time.
Closing word
Windows lacks files and data from one PC to another to easily move an integrated tool. The new migration app, if it is released exactly, can fill that difference. This is not really in its current stage, but since it is in development, at least there is a least chance that Microsoft is adding very important features to it.
