How to download and install the September 2024 security update
Security updates are installed automatically on non-managed Windows systems. On managed systems, this depends on administrator configuration and the system used to distribute updates.
Updates are not installed in real-time. Home users who want to secure their device immediately can manually install the update to speed things up.
This can be easily accomplished through Windows Update, or by manually downloading the update from Microsoft's download site.
If you use Windows Update, here's how it works:
- Select Start, type Windows Update and load the Windows Update item displayed.
- Select Check for Updates to run a manual check for updates.
Comment: Make sure you have a recovery plan, for example, by creating a system backup before installing updates. Windows Update can and has failed in the past.
