Microsoft has released a new build for Windows 11 Insider channels Dave and Canary. These classic Windows apps introduce new AI capabilities to Paint and Notepad.
Description:
- Option to rewrite text is available in Notepad.
- Paint is generative fill and erase.
- Paint is also getting updates to CoCreator and Image Creator.
Notepad: New AI-Powered Rewrite Feature
Notepad, Windows' classic text editor, is getting rewriting capabilities powered by artificial intelligence. We reviewed these in January 2024 when news about the feature broke.
These appear to be similar to the Copilot rewrite options that Microsoft is offering elsewhere. When you highlight text in Notepad, you get the option to have it replaced by AI.
Options include changing the size of the text, for example, making it longer, adjusting the tone or format.

Microsoft notes You can access the feature either by selecting Rewrite from the context menu or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + I.
The AI generates three versions of the text based on your selection. These can be modified by changing the available text options.
Note that you can't provide text instructions; You can simply modify the size, tone, and format to get different rewrites. Microsoft is also implementing content filtering “to ensure that the text generated is free from harmful, offensive or inappropriate content”.
Microsoft notes that this feature is currently in preview. It is only available to users who are signed in with a Microsoft account and live in the following regions: United States, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Users in these areas get 50 credits for rewriting.
Users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand who have a Microsoft 365 Personal & Family account or a Copilot Pro subscription can access the feature by spending AI credits directly.
Microsoft Paint's new AI features
Microsoft Paint is getting many AI-powered features. Generative Fill enables you to add content to existing images using text instructions.
Microsoft shows an example of adding a castle to a landscape using this feature. The company writes: “With Generative Fill, you can make edits and additions with just a few words while maintaining your project's existing art style.”
- To use the tool, you need to make a selection on the image using the selection tool.
- Once done, select the Generative Fill option from the menu that pops up.
- To use the feature enter text instructions and press the Create button.
AI creates content based on the instructions given. If you're not satisfied, press “Try Again” to get a different creation. When you're satisfied, press the Keep button to apply it to the canvas.
This feature is limited to Copilot+ PCs and users must sign in with a Microsoft account.
delete generative
The second addition helps to remove objects on images. It is available as part of the eraser tool in Paint.
- With the eraser tool selected, choose the Generative Erase option.
- Use the Erase brush to select the content you want to remove from the image.
- Select the Apply button to begin the removal process.
The options provided include “Add area to erase” or “Reduce area to erase.” Erase options are also available when selecting the rectangular or free-form selection tool.
Erase option is available for all Windows 11 PCs.
Updates for CoCreator and Image Creator
CoCreator, a tool designed to help create artwork by entering a text prompt, should now “deliver better results faster,” according to Microsoft.
It reacts to your drawings on the canvas and creates content based on it. This experience is only available on CoPilot+ PC.
Image Creator, a tool for instructing AI to create an image based on a text prompt, is now available in additional markets.
