If you've been using a Windows PC for at least a decade, you'll remember the time when Microsoft started promoting creativity. This culminated with the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update and several apps designed for creators.
One of them was Microsoft Paint 3D. This app set out to do the unthinkable: replace the old granddaddy of image editing apps on Windows. At that time, Microsoft Paint was a bare bones app. It supports certain image types and editing options.
This hasn't stopped users from creating stunning works of art using the editor. It also had a dedicated fan base.
Microsoft Paint 3D was designed to support 2D and 3D image creation. If Microsoft hadn't also redesigned the entire interface of the application, most users probably wouldn't mind.
There were noticeable differences. Paint 3D was optimized for touch input; It includes large icons and controls..
Microsoft is removing Paint 3D from the Microsoft Store
When Microsoft realized that Paint 3D would never be as popular as Paint, it changed course. It erased Microsoft Paint from the list of obsolete apps and services and replaced it with Microsoft Paint 3D.
The company stopped installing Paint 3D and the equally disliked 3D Viewer from new Windows installations in 2021.
Microsoft announced in early 2024 that it would remove the app from the Store on November 4, 2024. At the time, Microsoft wrote: “Paint 3D is deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. To view and edit 2D images, you can use Paint or Photos to view 3D content.” You can, you can use the 3D viewer.
Today is that day. If you're reading this on November 4, you may have few hours left To download Paint 3D on your Windows machine.
While Paint 3D is being deleted from the Microsoft Store, it remains untouched when installed on user devices. If you have installed the app, it will remain accessible.
Comment: Microsoft does not provide any type of support for the app. There will be no updates or new features. Over time, security issues and non-security bugs are likely to occur.
Microsoft recommends using the classic Paint app on Windows for image editing (or Photos) and the 3D Viewer for viewing 3D models.
Microsoft Paint is getting an update
Microsoft has updated many classic Windows apps over the years. Paint received several updates that added more tools and options. Notable are the background removal tool, dark mode support and several AI-features.
The change is subtle, as Microsoft was careful to keep the essence of the application untouched this time.
