The valve is expanding the reach of its open-source steamos by announcing a new compatibility rating system for third-party equipment running on its Linux-based operating system. The steam already has a rating system for the handheld gaming device of the valve, a steam deck, which uses the steam deck verified badge.
However, the new system will not use these existing ratings. According to the valve, the new game rating will rely on a satent of the results from steam deck compatibility tests, evaluating important elements such as sports functionality, launcher abilities and anti-chest support. The game will be evaluated by an automated process to give steamos compatibility rating. If someone passes the check on the game equipment, it will be marked as steamos. These ratings apply to any hardware running steamos, except for steam decks.
Valve Announcement When the gaming platform prepares for the launch of Lenovo Legion Go S, the handheld in hand is ready to ship soon, and there will be a 1 third party steamos device to display the official ratings for the game on the steam. Initially, the valve plans to assess and rate over 18,000 games on the steam platform based on their compatibility with these emerging equipment. The image depicted in this article shows an example of what the compatibility rating looks.
These ratings will only appear on compatible devices like The Legion GoS, which provides users AT-A-Glance Insights whether a game will run smoothly on steamos,
The move to support steamos on third-party devices has been welcomed by the gaming community, as the popularity of Linux is gradually increasing. It can provide some very important competition for Windows 11 and for Nintendo Switch 2 in the gaming market. The valve is hoping that steamos will be used on more devices in future, and can be adopted for laptops, or even desktops. For example, HP had revealed that it avoided making gaming handheld due to the boundaries related to Windows.
