The 2024 feature update for Windows 11 is a bit confusing. Copilot+ has already been released for PC, but it's still unclear when it will arrive on basically all existing Windows 11 devices.
At the time of writing the only ARM-based PCs are Copilot+ PCs. Intel and AMD have not yet released their new line of processors.
For Intel, this change will happen in October 2024, when Lunar Lake processors become available. announced the The chips “deliver exceptional performance, unprecedented x86 power efficiency, a massive jump in graphics performance, uncompromised application compatibility, advanced security, and unrivalled AI compute,” the company said this week.
Benchmarks are not yet available and the verdict on the chips is still out. The release of the chips shows that Windows AI features have changed from being limited to Arm devices to wider availability.
Arm on Windows has its limitations, for example with regard to application compatibility. At least some users interested in AI may have waited for the release of new AMD and Intel processors to increase availability.
As for Intel, it says that the company's Core Ultra 200V series processors are “eligible to receive the Copilot+ PC feature”. It has even said that these will be released as part of a free update to be released in November.
Has Intel leaked the release month of Windows 11, version 24H2? Or is it a separate upgrade that is different from a feature update? Intel has said nothing and Microsoft, as usual, has remained tight-lipped about releasing the information.
There are two possible release scenarios here:
- Microsoft is releasing this update as an optional update at the end of September. Then it will be released on the second Tuesday of October.
- Microsoft is releasing this feature update as an optional update in late October. It will be available to all users in November.
Intel will officially launch the processors on September 24, 2024. More than 20 manufacturers already have devices in the pipeline, according to Intel.
As far as the features are concerned, Intel has listed these key features:
- Cooler, quieter performance and responsiveness in ultra-thin designs.
- Long real-world battery life.
- Built-in security that helps prevent malware attacks and minimize vulnerabilities.
- Built-in Intel Arc graphics for accelerated creation and seamless game play, even on the go.
- Lightning-fast connectivity with Intel® Wi-Fi 7 (5 GHz).
- The ability to connect the PC to multiple monitors, transfer files, and charge the PC with Thunderbolt Share 3.
- Instant awakening and fast charging.
- Highest sustainability standards with EPEAT Gold certification.
The first benchmarks are expected to come out in September. It's probably a good idea to wait for them to come out before making any buying decisions.
Furthermore, AMD has not yet revealed the launch date of its Strix Point processor, which will also get Copilot+ PC approval from Microsoft.
