When Microsoft announced the AI-Feature recall last year, it rode on the wave of positive AI news and coverage. Copilot was taking off and integration of AI features in Windows and other products had already begun.
Microsoft did not expect the response to be announced to remember it. To better understand, it is necessary to look at the initial functionality of the convenience.
The recall was designed as a tool for users to have better conversations and return to the activities of the past. Remember will regularly take the screen snapshot of the screen, use metadata and AI to analyze the activity, and allow users to interact with AI about it.
You can remember to list all websites about a certain subject, which you opened in the past, ask it about the whereabouts of a specific document, which you can describe the activity of the previous week on the PC, or describe it.
Criticism: Remember was heavily criticized. The main points included a recall opt-out, which meant that it would run automatically on user systems, that the information collected to it was not properly safe, that its database would become a high-value target for malicious actors, and that Microsoft did not conduct public testing.
Microsoft postponed the launch as a result, stating that it would return to the drawing board to address anxiety.
The company published information about the revised recall facility at the end of September 2024. This new version will be opt-in and AI collecting data will be better preserved.
Remember is making a comeback
Microsoft released a new release preview for Windows 11 yesterday. This construction, 26100.3902Miss slowly. It is labeled as a preview version and is available only to Copilot+ PC.
Here is described how Microsoft describes this feature: “With AI capabilities of Copilot+ PCS, now it is possible to find and get any app, website, image, or document quickly, just describing its content.”
Microsoft says that users need to opt-in to start using recall and also enroll in Windows Hello. By doing this, the construction of the system screen of the system will begin.
According to Microsoft, users are always under control. They can stop or remove the snapshot saved at any time.
Windows hello authentication kicks on the system to use it whenever the previous material is launched. The material found can be reopened or paired with a parture to click. This allows users to “take immediate action” on the screen shown on the screen.
Closing word
Recall is available only to Copilot+ PC. The good news is that it is opt-in, which means that you do not have to worry too much about it, if you do not plan to use it. Is this the major feature that Microsoft has targeted to push AI to the next level? Probably not. Although it can be used in task environment and other special environment, it is unlikely that most of regular Windows users will find it highly useful.
