Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system supports a wide range of file formats by default. JPEG XL, a royalty-free open image format is not yet on that default list.
What is JPEG XL? Image format promises better web compatibility than JPEG, including many features that allow webmasters and users to transfer existing images to new format:
- Compression efficiency.
- Support for defective and harmful compression.
- Support for transparency.
- Support and a wide range of colors for HDR.
- Progressive loading support.
- backward compatibility.
Currently the main negative side has limited support for the format and a lack of hardware decoding support.
Windows 11: How to establish support for JPEG XL
Microsoft published JPEG XL Image Extension On microsoft storeWindows 11 users can download the app to add support for JPEG XL format on Windows 11.
Comment: Image extension is compatible with only Windows 11, version 24h2. When you try to install it on the old version of Windows 11 or on the Windows 10 System, you get a JPEG XL image extension failed error.
If you run Windows 11, version 24h2 on a device and use the Microsoft Store, you can open the JPEG XL Image Extension page to download and install support for JPEG XL XL.
If you do not use the Microsoft Store, you can use this Adguard Tool to download the plugin file directly from the Microsoft server. Here’s how it is done:

Windows basically supports JPEG XL after installation. This means that the image and editing tools should support the format.

Many image editors and audiences support JPEG XL already on Windows, either originally or as plugins. For example, Pint.net has supported JPEG-XL for some time as plugin. Developer Rick Bruster has now added plugin Latest beta So that users do not need to install plugin manually to add support.
