Lenovo Thinkpad owners Windows 11 and Windows 10 are facing headaches with BIOS updates due to the recent changes made by Microsoft. Reports indicate that the latest Windows update has changed the way to treat some executable files, which block them for safety reasons.
It is called Winflash64.exe, which has to be updated to BIOS. The results have been chaotic, as users trying to apply BIOS updates can withstand error messages that indicate that the update process has failed. Bug Windows 10 with 22H2 affects Windows 11 24h2, 23h2 and 22h2.
The issue arises from Microsoft’s safety blocks, which has inspired the operating system to labeled the BIOS update as a ‘weak driver’. As a result, the Windows firmware declines to execute the update. It affects users with various thinkpad models who are trying to use Lenovo’s bios update utility or Lenovo Vantage app. This condition marks an unusual turn of events, BIOS updates naturally carry some risks, but it is rare for them to be flagged directly by the operating system in this way. Sometimes BIOS updates may be necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the computer.
Lenovo is currently advising users to use Windows updates as an alternative method to apply BIOS updates to bypass the issue. It depends on the ability to find the appropriate patch of the workaround operating system and distribute them through Windows updates. If no update is visible, users are checked for new patch from time to time, which expects to resolve the case.
Fortunately, Lenovo is actively addressing the situation. A new BIOS version, V1.61, has been released and should be compatible with the company’s BIOS update utility. When successful, this update will stabilize the installation process for the affected thinkpad model.
