Friendship (choose at most one)
- Contact
- Someone you know to get in touch with. Often symmetrical.
- Acquaintance
- Someone with whom you have exchanged greetings and not much else (if any) – maybe one or two short conversations. Often symmetrical.
- Friend
- Someone you are friends with. A compatriot, friend, housemate(boy|girl) whom you know. Often symmetrical.
Physical

- Someone you’ve actually met in person. Symmetrical.

- co-worker
- Someone one works with, or works in the same organization. Symmetrical. Usually transmissible.
- Colleague
- Someone in the same field of study/activity. Symmetrical. Often transmissible.
Geographic (choose at most one)
- co-resident
- Someone with whom you share a street address. Symmetric and transitive.
- Neighbour
- Someone who lives nearby, perhaps just at the address or door down the street. Symmetrical. Often transmissible.
Family (choose maximum one)

- A person’s genetic offspring, or someone who is adopted and cared for by a person. is the inverse generator.
- Parents
- The opposite of a child.
- siblings
- Someone with whom you share a parent. Symmetrical. Usually transmissible.
- spouse
- You are married to someone. Symmetrical. Not transitive.
- relatives
- A relative, someone you consider part of your extended family. Symmetric and generally transitive.
Romantic

- are you dating anyone. Symmetrical. Not transitive.

- Someone with whom you are intimate and at least somewhat committed, usually exclusively. Symmetrical. Not transitive.

- A link to itself at a different URL. Excluding all other XFN values. Necessary symmetry. There is an implicit “I” relationship from the contents of a directory to the directory itself.
